The Letters of John Campton (1854-1920)
These are the letters of John Campton written in 1899 to a Mr W. Illsley, presumably of Woodville as the letters are not addressed. According to the census records of 1901 there was a William Illsley living with his young family in the household of his father-in-law, James Fletcheron, on Station Road, Woodville .
The letters are an example of the literacy skills John maintained.

Sir I have thought it now be best to measure the brickwork up at the finish at fourteen pence per yard for nine inch brickwork Sir That what I will sign the agreement for the brickwork price for lathing tiling roof and torching to measure up when covering at five shillings and six pence per square prire to fix all fire grates and copper sinks and lay quarries floor for the sum of eight pounds. £8 0s 0d.
Sir I must draw on account weekly for wages and to settle up when the work is finish
