The Campton Ancestry

The Campton family that appears on this site spans nine generations and over 340 years, dating back to 1680 and the birth of Gabriel Campdon (1680-1710) of Corley, Warwickshire.

The following family chart shows ancestors and their siblings, all descendants of Gabriel. Many of their names are biblical, with Thomas being the most popular choice. Judging by the birth and death dates, it would appear that not many members of the Campton Family knew their grandparents as they were born after they had died.

The origins of the Campton surname probably lie in the village of the same name in Bedfordshire, UK. As it is a habitational name, ‘tun’ being the Old English word for settlement, it is more than likely that this is the place from which the first ancestors came. However, by 1891 no Campton families were living in Bedfordshire, as illustrated by the map below.

Current Research

John Campton (1797-1854) may have remarried. His first wife, Anne Freeman, died young, aged 25 or 26 and not long after the birth of the couple’s last child, Anne (b.1829). The circumstances of her untimely death are not known, but they may be connected to her giving birth. John’s second wife was called Elizabeth.

Distribution of Families in 1891

The distribution map of Campton families in 1891 shows a high number of families in Lancashire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire and London. The remaining families listed on the 1891 census are spread liberally across the rest of England with the main concentrations in the south west and the north east. There were no Campton families in Wales and nine counties of England.

Gabriel Campdon, the earliest know ancestor, brought his family up in Warwickshire. It was his grandson, Thomas Campton who moved into Leicestershire where his descendants settled in the village of Stoney Stanton two generations later. John Campton then moved his side of the family to Derbyshire where the majority of his descendants remain today.
